What’s the difference between capping stones and coping stones?

Coping stones refer to a series of stones running along the top of a free-standing wall, creating a protective lining that gives garden walls a finished look. Capping stones are single stones placed on top of pillars and gate posts. Similarly to coping stones, stone caps are both a protective feature and make architectural features in your garden look ‘complete’.

Why do I need coping stones for my wall?

Stone walls are an investment, and like with any investment, it makes sense to protect it. That’s where coping stones come in. Coping stones are a protective feature that prevent rainwater from seeping into the wall structure from above and thereby compromising its strength over time. They’re also visually effective, creating a smooth, consistent surface running along the top of a wall to finish it off.

Can you use paving slabs as coping stones?

Some of our customers do use excess limestone and sandstone paving stones left over from their landscaping project to create coping stones, which allows you to seamlessly blend the wall and patio or path together. However, our coping stones are thicker than our paving stones, providing a sturdier, longer lasting solution – particularly if you’re planning on sitting on top of a low wall!

Do coping stones need to overhang?

Coping stones tend to overhang, allowing rainwater to fall away from the wall’s surface. Typically, this overhang is 25-35mm on each side.

How long do coping and capping stones last?

Properly installed, sealed and maintained coping and capping stones can last decades at a time. It’s also possible to repair coping stones, saving on replacement costs. The real benefit comes from the protection of your wall or column, which will last longer with protective capping and coping.
