FAQs & Advice

Traditionally, railway sleepers were used to space rail tracks. In more recent years, these rectangular wooden blocks have become a staple for many gardens as a creative alternative to decking. Timber sleepers are made from a range of materials, including pine, oak, softwood and hardwood. You can buy them new, or choose reclaimed railway sleepers.

Used railway sleepers are typically graded based on quality. Grade A railway sleepers are the best quality and will provide a sleek, clean look. Grade B sleepers are slightly worn and weathered, making them a great option for rustic garden decor. New railway sleepers aren’t rated in the same way as these will always be of the same high quality.

For a precise cut, we recommend using a wet saw with adjustable diamond blades. It’s important to note that there is no guarantee that porcelain tile cladding won’t chip when cutting, so it’s best to buy more than you think you’ll need.

Hardwood and oak sleepers will last longer, due to this material’s durability and resistance to decay. Oak has a natural lifespan of up to 100 years. If you choose a softwood sleeper, you’ll benefit from easier manoeuvrability and drilling, and these can last up to 30 years as long as you use sealing to protect them.

Each type of garden sleeper has its benefits. New sleepers tend to be more expensive than used ones, but they’re easier to treat and paint. Old sleepers are available due to railways replacing their old, creosote treated sleepers with concrete and other newer materials. This means that they tend to last a long time, however the creosote can become sticky in hot weather and may not be suitable for use near your vegetable patch. Reclaimed sleepers are also worn, which means they have a more rustic appearance than new ones.

The most common way to use sleepers is as raised flower beds, providing variation of size and shape in your garden. As a durable material, sleepers can also be used as an alternative to limestone paving stones to create a path in your garden. They’re also a more cost-effective option than natural stone walling and stone steps, perfect for gardens that are on a slope. You can even get creative and make your own DIY garden furniture with them!
