How to get your garden ready for summer 2025

As spring approaches, it’s the perfect time to refresh your outdoor spaces by cleaning your paving stones. Over the winter months, patios and walkways can accumulate dirt, moss, and stains, diminishing their appearance. Regular maintenance not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also prolongs the lifespan of your paving stones.

  1. Clear Debris

Begin by removing any furniture, planters, or other items from your patio. Use a broom or leaf blower to eliminate leaves, twigs, and other debris that have gathered over the winter. This step ensures that the cleaning process is thorough and effective.

  1. Address Weeds and Moss

Weeds and moss can infiltrate the joints between paving stones, leading to uneven surfaces and potential damage. To tackle this:

  • Manual Removal: Pull out weeds by hand or use a weeding tool to extract the roots, preventing regrowth.
  • Natural Solutions: For moss, a mixture of white vinegar and water can be effective. Experts suggest a 1:1 ratio; spray the solution on the affected areas, wait for it to dry, and then scrub with a bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly and allow the patio to dry.
  1. Clean the Surface

After addressing vegetation, it’s time to clean the paving stones:

  • Use a hose pipe to wet the area and stiff brush/squeegee. Avoid using pressure washers as they can damage the grout in between the joints. For stubborn stains cleaning products may be required.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of acidic cleaners, as they can damage the stone surface. Instead, opt for cleaners specifically designed for natural stone. Take a look at our Sealing & Cleaning Solutions to find the perfect product for your needs.

  1. Reseal the Pavers
  • If you have sealed your patio to protect or enhance the colour you need to be aware that the sealant will wear down over time, which may lead to stains and discoloration. Applying a new layer of sealant can restore the stone’s appearance and provide a protective barrier against future staining. Ensure the surface is completely dry before applying the sealant, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results.
  1. Prevent Future Growth

To minimize the recurrence of weeds and moss:

  • Regular Sweeping: Keep the surface free from debris to discourage weed growth.
  • Proper Drainage: Ensure that water doesn’t pool on the patio, as stagnant water promotes moss growth.

By dedicating time to clean and maintain your paving stones this spring, you’ll create a welcoming outdoor space ready for the season ahead
