As the colder months approach, now is the ideal time to prepare your patio and external walls for the wetter and colder conditions ahead. Rain, frost, standing water, falling leaves and fluctuating temperatures can all affect outdoor paving and masonry. A few simple checks and maintenance before winter sets in can help protect your outdoor surfaces and prevent minor issues from becoming more significant problems.

Clean Your Patio Thoroughly

Begin by removing leaves, dirt, moss and general garden debris from your paving.

Organic matter can retain moisture on the surface and contribute to moss and algae growth, particularly in shaded areas.

A thorough clean before winter will help keep the paving in good condition and make maintenance much easier when spring arrives.

Pay particular attention to corners, shaded areas, paving joints and areas where debris tends to collect.

Inspect Your Paving

Take the opportunity to inspect your patio carefully.

Look for:

Cracked or damaged paving

Loose or uneven slabs

Deteriorating joints

Damaged pointing

Areas where water regularly collects

Addressing small issues before winter can help prevent further deterioration during periods of heavy rain and frost.

Inspect External Walls & Coping Stones

External walls are exposed to the elements throughout the winter months and should be included in your seasonal maintenance checks.

Inspect garden walls, retaining walls and external cladding for any visible signs of damage, including cracks, loose sections, deteriorating pointing or areas of persistent damp.

Check Coping Stones & Wall Toppers

Coping stones and wall toppers provide an important finishing detail while also helping to protect the wall beneath from rainfall.

Before winter, check that your coping stones are secure, properly positioned and free from damage.

Pay particular attention to the joints and the way water is being directed away from the wall.

A well-finished wall with correctly installed coping can help reduce water exposure to the masonry below.

Protect Your Garden Furniture

Where possible, move garden furniture into storage or a sheltered area during the winter months.

If furniture is left outside, ensure it is appropriately protected and avoid leaving metal furniture in one position for prolonged periods, where rust staining may occur.

Your Winter Patio Checklist

Before winter arrives, take a few minutes to check:

✓ Patio is clean and free from debris
✓ Drainage channels and gullies are clear
✓ No significant cracks or loose paving are present
✓ Joints and pointing are in good condition
✓ External walls show no obvious signs of damage
✓ Coping stones and wall toppers are secure
✓ Moss and weeds have been removed
✓ Natural stone has been assessed for sealing
✓ Garden furniture has been suitably stored or protected

Prepare Your Outdoor Space for Winter

Winter maintenance does not need to be complicated. Regular cleaning, good drainage and a thorough inspection of your paving and external walls can make a significant difference to the long-term appearance and condition of your outdoor space.

Whether your garden features Indian sandstone, limestone, porcelain paving, cobbles, wall cladding or natural stone coping, preparing your surfaces before winter means you can head into the colder months with confidence — and be ready to enjoy your garden again when spring arrives.

Prepare now. Protect your investment. Enjoy it for years to come.

How Should I Clean My Indian Sandstone Patio?

A complete guide to keeping your natural stone looking its best all year round.

Indian sandstone is one of the UK’s most popular paving choices, thanks to its natural beauty, durability, and timeless appeal. Whether you’ve chosen Raj Green, Rippon Buff, Kandla Grey, Mint Fossil, or another stunning variety, regular maintenance will keep your patio looking fresh for years to come.

The good news? Cleaning Indian sandstone is simple when you use the right methods.

Why Does Indian Sandstone Get Dirty?

As a natural stone, Indian sandstone is exposed to the elements every day. Over time, you may notice:

Green algae

Moss

Lichen

Dirt and mud

Fallen leaves

Bird droppings

Food and drink stains

This is completely normal and doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with your paving.

Step 1: Sweep the Patio Regularly

The easiest way to maintain your sandstone is by giving it a regular sweep.

Removing leaves, soil and debris prevents moisture from becoming trapped on the surface, reducing the chance of moss and algae developing.

A quick sweep once a week can make a huge difference.

Step 2: Wash with Warm Water

For general cleaning, warm water is often all you need.

Use:

A bucket of warm water

A stiff outdoor brush (not a wire brush)

Plenty of elbow grease

Scrub the surface before rinsing thoroughly with clean water.

This removes everyday dirt without damaging the natural stone.

Step 3: Use a pH-Neutral Stone Cleaner

If your patio needs a deeper clean, choose a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for natural stone.

These cleaners effectively remove dirt without harming the sandstone or affecting its natural colour.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test the product on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Step 4: Can I Pressure Wash Indian Sandstone?

Yes—but with care.

Pressure washers can quickly remove dirt and algae, but using too much pressure may damage the stone or wash out the jointing.

For best results:

Use a fan spray rather than a concentrated jet.

Keep the nozzle at least 30 cm (12 inches) from the surface.

Work evenly across the patio.

Avoid directing the jet into the joints.

Use a moderate pressure setting rather than maximum power.

Used correctly, a pressure washer can refresh your patio without causing damage.

What Should You Avoid?

To protect your sandstone, avoid:

❌ Bleach (unless it’s specifically recommended for natural stone)

❌ Acidic cleaners such as brick acid or patio acid

❌ Wire brushes

❌ High-pressure washing directly into the joints

❌ Harsh chemicals that can strip away the stone’s natural appearance

Natural stone is incredibly durable, but it’s always worth treating it with care.

How Do I Remove Green Algae?

Green algae is one of the most common issues on patios, particularly in shaded or damp gardens.

The best solution is to:

Sweep away loose debris.

Apply a natural stone cleaner or algae remover suitable for sandstone.

Leave it to work as instructed.

Scrub with a stiff brush.

Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Keeping nearby plants trimmed back and allowing more sunlight onto the patio can also help prevent algae from returning.

What About Oil or Grease Stains?

For barbecue or cooking spills:

Blot the stain as soon as possible.

Wash with warm water and a stone-safe cleaner.

Avoid rubbing fresh oil deeper into the stone.

The quicker you tackle a stain, the easier it is to remove.

Should I Seal My Indian Sandstone?

Sealing isn’t essential, but it’s highly recommended.

A quality sandstone sealer can help:

Repel water

Reduce staining

Slow algae and moss growth

Make future cleaning much easier

Enhance the natural colours (if using an enhancing sealer)

Most patios only need resealing every 3–5 years, depending on foot traffic and weather exposure.

How Often Should I Clean My Patio?

For the best results:

Weekly: Sweep away leaves and dirt.

Every few months: Wash with warm water or a pH-neutral cleaner.

Once a year: Give the patio a deep clean and inspect the joints.

Every 3–5 years: Reapply sealer if required.

A little maintenance throughout the year is much easier than tackling years of built-up dirt.

Common Questions

Will Indian sandstone lose its colour?

No. One of the biggest advantages of natural sandstone is that its colour runs throughout the stone, so it won’t peel or flake like some manufactured products. Over time, it develops a natural patina that many homeowners find adds even more character.

Is Indian sandstone high maintenance?

Not at all. With regular sweeping, occasional washing and the option of sealing, Indian sandstone is easy to care for and can look beautiful for decades.

Can I use washing-up liquid?

A small amount for light cleaning is unlikely to cause problems, but it’s better to use a cleaner designed specifically for natural stone to avoid leaving residues or affecting the stone over time.

Keep Your Sandstone Looking Beautiful

Indian sandstone is designed to stand the test of time. With a little routine maintenance, you’ll enjoy a patio that continues to enhance your garden year after year.

Why Rajasthan?

Rajasthan sits on vast deposits of sedimentary rock that formed around 100–200 million years ago, when much of the area was covered by shallow seas, rivers and ancient deserts. Over millions of years, layers of sand were compressed into the sandstone we use today.

The region’s geology creates a wide variety of colours, including:

Raj Green

Kandla Grey

Mint

Autumn Brown

Fossil Mint

Rippon Buff

Rainbow Sandstone

The unique mix of minerals in each layer gives every slab its own colour and character.

Step 1: Finding the Stone

Before quarrying begins, geologists and quarry managers inspect the site to identify high-quality sandstone beds.

They assess:

Stone thickness

Colour consistency

Natural faults and cracks

Rock strength

Ease of extraction

Because sandstone occurs in layers, quarry operators carefully plan where to cut to maximise usable material and reduce waste.

Step 2: Removing the Overburden

The sandstone isn’t always visible at the surface.

Workers first remove the soil, clay and loose rock that sits above the sandstone. This material, known as overburden, is stripped away using excavators, bulldozers and loaders until the solid stone is exposed.

Step 3: Cutting the Blocks

Unlike blasting used in some hard-rock quarries, sandstone is usually extracted by making controlled cuts.

Large stone blocks are separated using:

Diamond wire saws

Circular stone saws

Hydraulic splitters

Pneumatic tools

Wedges inserted into drilled holes

These methods help minimise cracking and preserve the stone’s natural quality.

Step 4: Lifting the Stone

Once a block has been freed, heavy machinery such as cranes, excavators or loaders lifts it from the quarry floor.

Some blocks can weigh several tonnes, so careful handling is essential to avoid damage.

Step 5: Transport to the Processing Yard

The rough blocks are transported from the quarry to nearby processing facilities, where they are cut into slabs and paving.

Here they are:

Sawn to the required thickness

Cut into standard sizes (such as 900 × 600 mm or project packs)

Hand dressed if required

Calibrated for a more consistent thickness (depending on the product)

Checked for quality before packing

Step 6: Hand Finishing

One feature that makes Indian sandstone so distinctive is the amount of craftsmanship involved.

Many products are still finished by skilled workers who:

Hand cut edges

Create naturally riven surfaces

Produce hand-dressed finishes

Tumble the stone for a weathered appearance

Sort slabs by colour and quality

This process means no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Step 7: Packing and Shipping

After inspection, the stone is stacked onto pallets, securely strapped and prepared for export.

It is then transported by road to ports before being shipped around the world, including to the UK, where it becomes patios, pathways, driveways and garden features.

Why Every Slab Looks Different

One of the biggest misconceptions is that every pallet should look identical.

Natural sandstone is a product of geology, not a factory. Each slab comes from a different part of the rock formation and may contain:

Colour variation

Fossil markings

Quartz veins

Iron oxide patterns

Natural riven textures

Mineral deposits

These differences aren’t defects—they’re part of what makes natural stone unique.

Why This Matters to Homeowners

When you choose Indian sandstone, you’re not buying a manufactured product. You’re choosing a material that has taken millions of years to form and has been carefully quarried, crafted and finished by skilled workers.

The result is a patio or garden that has genuine character, natural durability and a unique appearance that can’t be replicated by artificial materials.

Getting the calculation right helps avoid delays, wasted materials and unnecessary costs.

Step 1: Measure Your Area

Measure the:

Length

Width

For rectangular patios:

Length × Width = Total Area (m²)

Example:

6m × 4m = 24m²

Step 2: Allow for Cuts and Wastage

We recommend ordering an additional:

10% for simple patios

15% for complex designs or multiple cuts

Example:

24m² patio + 10% = 26.4m² required

Step 3: Consider Borders

If you’re adding:

Why natural stone varies in colour

Most Indian sandstone was formed between 20 and 200 million years ago, when layers of sand were deposited by ancient rivers, lakes and shallow seas. Over time, immense pressure compressed these sand deposits into the stone we see today.

As each layer formed under slightly different conditions, the minerals trapped within the stone changed. These minerals are responsible for the wide range of colours found in sandstone today.

What Creates the Different Colours?

Golden & Buff Tones
Created by iron oxides and mineral-rich sediments. These warm colours are often associated with traditional British-style patios and gardens.

Reds & Browns
Produced by higher concentrations of iron that have oxidised over time, similar to how metal rusts.

Greys & Charcoals
Typically formed where there is less iron and different mineral compositions within the stone.

Subtle Green Hues
Can occur due to minerals such as chlorite or glauconite present during the stone’s formation.

Natural Banding & Veining
These unique patterns are created by changing sediment layers, mineral deposits and ancient water movement through the rock.

Every Slab Is Unique

Unlike porcelain, which is manufactured to achieve a consistent appearance, natural sandstone is quarried directly from the earth. This means:

✔ No two slabs are identical
✔ Colour variation is expected and desirable
✔ Natural riven textures vary from piece to piece
✔ Fossil markings and mineral deposits may be present
✔ Each patio develops its own character and charm

A Stone with History

Indian sandstone has been used in construction for centuries. Some of the most famous structures in India were built using sandstone, including parts of the magnificent Red Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

Today, sandstone remains one of the most popular paving materials worldwide because it combines natural beauty, durability and timeless appeal.

PORCELAIN VS SANDSTONE

When choosing the right paving for your garden, it is important to know what you are looking to get out of your product. Colour, size and property types all play a key factor when putting your vision together. Here at A Cowley & Sons we offer Natural Sandstone & Limestone, as well as Porcelain Tiles. All offer unique benefits and will completely transform an outdoor space, but which one is the right choice for your project?

In this guide, we’ll compare durability, appearance, maintenance and practicality to help you make the best decision for your property.

Porcelain Pros

-Porcelain paving provides a clean, contemporary finish. Manufactured using advanced technology, it can replicate natural stone while maintaining a consistent colour and pattern.

-R11 British Standard Non slip. Ideal for outdoor use, including around swimming pools, internally in bathrooms and wet rooms.

-Porcelain is non-porous, making it resistant to stains, algae and moss growth. Easy to clean with just a brush or pressure washer.

-Material is highly durable when installed correctly.

-Porcelain paving is frost-resistant and doesn’t absorb water. This makes it much less likely to crack during the colder months.

-No need for sealing or special treatments.

Natural Sandstone Pros

-Sandstone is renowned for its unique beauty and natural colours, ranging from warm yellows to deep reds and earthy tones. Each slab has its own distinct pattern, which adds character and charm to your outdoor space. This versatility allows sandstone to complement various architectural styles, from rustic to modern.

-Durable material that can withstand various weather conditions, including heat, rain, and frost. With proper care, a sandstone patio can last 20 to 30 years or more. Its strength and resistance to cracking make it a reliable choice for high-traffic areas.

-Slip Resistance and Safety. The naturally textured surface of sandstone provides excellent grip, even when wet, making it a safe option for families, especially those with children or elderly members.

-Cost effective and sustainable. Compared to other natural stones, sandstone is often more affordable while still providing a high-end look. As a natural material, it has a smaller environmental impact than many manufactured alternatives, making it a more sustainable choice for eco-conscious homeowners.

-Available in Hand dressed and Tumbled. – (Check out our other blogs to see what the difference is!) Walling Stone: Hand Dressed or Tumbled? | Cowley Stone

A-JOINT® TRAFFIC is a heavy-duty paving grout specially developed for public areas. It is designed for traffic loads of up to 40 t, is sweeper-suction machine resistant and at the same time frost and de-icing salt resistant.

Due to its high flowability and self-compacting properties, A-JOINT® TRAFFIC can be used for joints as small as 5 mm. Due to its fast curing, the grouted surface can be walked on after only 6 hours and driven on after 24 hours. A-JOINT® TRAFFIC can be used universally for everything from new jointing to the renovation of existing surfaces, reducing maintenance costs and the risk of accidents caused by loose stones.

A-JOINT® TRAFFIC is particularly suitable for highly frequented squares, public roads and paths as well as for use in paved street gutters.

The joints must be cleaned of weeds, roots and loose parts and cleared to a depth of at least 30 mm or, in case of traffic load, to 2/3 of the stone height. The surface to be grouted must be free from all dirt. Adjacent areas that are not to be grouted should be masked or covered. To avoid settling and loose stones, we recommend a permanently water-permeable and load-bearing substrate corresponding to the subsequent load (pay attention to the current standards and guidelines). We generally recommend the bonded construction method.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Prepare

Joints must be cleaned of weeds, roots and loose and the surfaces clean of dirt and debris.

depth need to be of at least 25 mm (2/3 of the stone height for traffic load). Adjacent areas that are not to be grouted should be masked or covered. To avoid settling and loose stones, we recommend a permanent water-permeable and load-bearing substrate corresponding to the
subsequent load (pay attention to the current standards and guidelines). We generally recommend the bonded
construction method.

Pre-Wetting

Pre-wet the paving surface thoroughly with clean, cold water. Warm or highly absorbent stone may require extra water.

Mixing Buckets

Open the bucket. Pour the bottle inside completely to the sand component. Fill the emptied bottle
to ¼ = 0.25 liters of water and close it, shake vigorously and add to the mixture. Make sure the bottle is
completely empty. Use a professional stirring or mixing device. Start mixing process and mix thoroughly for
at least 6 minutes until a creamy, flowing mass is obtained. No further addition of water is necessary.

Mixing Bags

Open the bag and pour the sand into a suitable mixing container. Add the contents of the separately supplied
bottle containers completely. Fill the emptied bottles with 0.5 litres of water each and cap them, shake
vigorously and add to the mixture. Make sure that the bottles are completely empty. Use a professional stirring
or mixing device. Start the mixing process. After 3 minutes mixing time, add another 2.5 litres of water and
mix thoroughly for an additional 3 minutes until a creamy, flowing mass is formed.

Fill the Joints

Pour the finished mixture onto the well pre-wetted surface. Work in the jointing compound carefully and as
diagonally as possible to the joint using a rubber squeegee. To make the most of the flowability, it is recom
mended to divide this mixture into two to three portions. Mix the remaining joint compound again briefly.
Keep the surface constantly wet during this work.

Clean the Surface

After approximately 10-20 minutes, sweep the stone surface carefully into the joint with a medium
coarse broom. If a white gel-like streaks form on the stone surface, then the sweeping time wasn’t long enough. Remove the remaining mortar residues with a fine coconut broom. grout that has been
swept off should no longer be used. Be aware that chamfers (beveling of the side edges) on pavers
must be exposed.

Aftercare

Protect the surface from rain for 12–24 hours.

Walkable after 24 hours

Traffic-ready after 3 days

Pressure-wash safe after 7 days (max 120 bar, 20 cm distance)

Why Professionals Love It?

Rapid curing and reliable results.

Suitable for residential and commercial paving.

German-made for precision and performance.

Elegant Aesthetic

Tumbled and brushed paving stones are mechanically “tumbled and brushed” to soften edges and create a softer, antique appearance. This process mimics the look of centuries-old stone, making it ideal for traditional, rustic or heritage-style properties. It is perfect if you are aiming for:

A Mediterranean or countryside look

A reclaimed or vintage aesthetic

Natural, organic landscaping

Natural Variation & Charm

The tumbled and brushed process gently mutes the natural colour of the stone, creating a delicate weathered look that adds rustic charm. This subtle aging effect enhances the stone’s character, making it feel beautifully worn and perfectly at home in any outdoor space.

Due to its softer feel compared to hand-dressed paving, tumbled and brushed paving is also a popular choice for internal use — particularly in rustic settings like farmhouses, country kitchens and barn conversions.

Why choose Tumbled and Brushed for internal use:

Softer, worn-in finish – More comfortable underfoot than hand-dressed or heavily textured paving.

Warm, rustic aesthetic – Complements traditional interiors like farmhouses, cottages, and barn conversions.

Seamless indoor-outdoor flow – Perfect for open-plan spaces that lead into patios or gardens.

Natural variation – Adds character and depth to floors without feeling overly uniform or manufactured.

Conclusion: Old-World Charm Meets Modern Function

Tumbled and brushed paving is more than just a design choice—it is a way to bring warmth, texture, and timeless character to your indoor or outdoor living spaces. Its soft texture and natural elegance makes it a smart and stylish product for any project.
